“My work over 35 years has led me to some essential conclusions about how psychotherapy can be most helpful.

I find it most important to create an atmosphere of safety in which current life distress can be understood and where important feelings and perspectives have room to emerge. As barriers to effectiveness become clear, it is easier to disengage from outdated approaches to life challenges. I use a relational analytic approach and thinking toward these ends.

With couples, I offer a safe setting where we identify together the interactional patterns that cause conflict. I focus with you on specific behaviors contributing to problems and work actively with you on finding more satisfying alternatives. I encourage you to talk to each other during the therapy hour so we can see your interaction live, look back on stressful points in a relationship to help understand how things went awry, and look at limitations coming from families of origin.”
